Character Creation

Character Creation is a combination of what is in the Fate Core book and Bulldogs!. Skills are developed using the Skill Modes from Fate System Toolkit while Refresh and Enhancements are handled by using a modified version of Bulldogs! excellent Alien Creation rules.

HIGH CONCEPT

Perhaps the most important aspect will often include the character’s career and their species. It is the character’s job, his life, his calling and his obligations. It should speak to the very core of the character on a fundamental level and provide both positives and negatives to the character.

TROUBLE

This should be the driving influence of the character that forces him to go out and face off against impossible odds. It can be either internal like a code of honor or perhaps an obligation to a group.

BACKGROUND

What region or culture are you from? What were your family circumstances like? What’s your relationship with your family? How were you educated? What were your friends like? Did you get into trouble much?

THE STORY

What was your first adventure? Choose a story title and an aspect to reflect the events of your initial trial by fire. Also pick one other player to be a guest star in the story.

GUEST STAR

In this phase, you tie the group together by having each character contribute a minor, supporting role in another character’s first adventure. Choose an aspect to reflect the role you played in this story.

GUEST STAR REDUX

In this phase, you tie the group together by having each character contribute a minor, supporting role in another character’s first adventure. Choose an aspect to reflect the role you played in this story.

POWER LEVELS

The GM and players of the game must select a Power Level for the campaign. This will determine the character’s starting Refresh and Skills. Refresh can be reduced by selecting various Enhancements or Stunts as presented in the Bulldogs! book. Skills must be selected using Skill Modes based on the Power Level.

FRESH MEAT

6 refresh, 3 skill modes (1 Background and 2 Profession). Select one at +1 and one at +2 and one at +3. From each Background or Profession the character must select a maximum of THREE of the skills listed. Also gains 5 points to Improve Skills.

At this point the characters are well trained normals or perhaps a talented beginner. Some enhancements might not be a viable option. The character will have to work REALLY hard to survive the grim realities of the World of Hurt.

VETERAN

7 refresh, 3 Skill Modes (1 Background, 2 Professions). Select one at +1 and one at +2 and one at +3. From each Background or Profession the character must select a maximum of FOUR of the skills listed. Also gains 7 points to Improve Skills.

At this level almost all the enhancements are a viable choice and a character will be skilled enough to hold their own in most situations. Yet they will still have plenty of room to grow over the course of a game.

HARDCORE

8 refresh, 3 Skill Modes (1 Background, 2 Professions). Select one at +1 and one at +2 and one at +3. From each Background or Profession the character must select a maximum of FIVE of the skills listed. Also gains 9 points to Improve Skills.

The character has gained quite a reputation and few can match their skill. The truly heavy hitters of the world will take notice of such a character which is both a blessing and a curse depending on the day of the week.

SERIOUS BADASS

10 refresh, 3 Skill Modes (1 Background, 2 Professions). Select one at +1 and one at +2 and one at +3. From each Background or Profession the character gains all of the skills listed. Also get 11 points to Improve Skills.

You have a reputation throughout the World of Hurt as a major player and there is very little you can’t accomplish.

SKILL MODES

The following is the same as the Skill Modes found in the Fate System Toolkit with slight modification. The original rules are found here.

Each player picks 1 background mode and two Professional Modes and rates them from +1 to +3. The mode’s rating becomes the default rating for a number of skills from the mode based on the character’s Power Level. For example Fresh Meat can only select 3 skills per mode while a Hardcore character can pick 5. Skills at this rating are trained. Skills one step above their mode’s level are focused, and skills two steps above are specialized.

Reinforced Skills

If two or three of a character’s modes contain the same skill, it’s reinforced. When this happens, write it down under its highest-rated mode, but not under any other. No skill should appear more than once on a character sheet.

If a skill is reinforced once—meaning it’s shared by two modes—improve it from trained to focused. If it’s reinforced twice—shared by all three modes—improve it from trained to specialized. A focus skill is increased by one while a specialized skill is increased by two.

Improving Skills

After that, each player has points to further improve skills based again on Power Level (see above).

Improvement

  • Train an untrained skill to Average +1: Cost: 2
  • Focus a trained skill: Cost: 1
  • Specialize a focused skill Cost: 2
  • Specialize a trained skill: Cost: 3

No skill can ever be improved beyond specialized.
